Signs Your CertainTeed Attic Air Sealing Is Failing

• Second-floor rooms run 8-12 degrees warmer than downstairs, especially between 2 and 6 p.m. This usually means your ridge vent baffles have flattened or your soffit intake is blocked by insulation drift, breaking the convection loop that CertainTeed’s system depends on. Hot air stagnates at the peak instead of exhausting.
• Frost or condensation on roofing nails inside the attic during January cold snaps. MemBrain that’s torn or improperly lapped loses its variable permeance. Moisture drives upward, hits the cold nail shanks, and condenses. Left alone, this rusts the shank and stains the ceiling below.
• Energy bills jump 20% or more versus the same month last year with no rate change. When air sealing fails, your conditioned air leaks into the attic faster than the insulation can slow it. We see this most in Canyon Lake homes built 2015-2019 where the original builder-grade foam at top plates has shrunk and pulled away.
• Musty smell in the attic or upstairs closets after rain. Failed ridge vent end caps or Intake Vent joints that opened up let wind-driven rain into the attic envelope. The CertainTeed closure foam is a specific density; generic foam tape degrades in UV within two Texas summers.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s where DIY gets expensive.

What you can check yourself: from the attic, look for torn MemBrain, light leaking through soffit areas, or flattened ridge vent baffles. Use your phone flashlight and photograph what you see. If you find a torn section, note the width and whether the tear runs parallel or across the roll direction. That’s useful information for us.

Where DIY goes wrong: MemBrain must be lapped 6″ at seams and sealed with CertainTeed’s acrylic adhesive, not generic construction tape. Ridge vent replacement involves working at height on a sloped surface, removing and reinstalling shingles without breaking the seal, and verifying exhaust flow with a smoke pencil or anemometer. Intake Vent installation requires maintaining the 1:150 or 1:300 intake-to-exhaust ratio, and getting that wrong pressurizes the attic, forces conditioned air out through can lights, and can backdraft gas appliances. We’ve been called to fix DIY ridge vent jobs where the homeowner used the wrong nail pattern and created a wind-driven rain channel that rotted the ridge board.
